Seven months, Sickness, Snow

I like alliteration. :)

It doesn't seem real that Analise is more than half-way through her first year of life. What an amazing seven months this has been. I was excited about becoming a Mommy, but had no idea that I would love it as much as I do!!

We had our first health adventure with Analise last week.
She had had a low fever (100-101) for 2 or 3 days, and then Thursday, in the space of an hour,
it suddenly shot up to 104.9! So we, of course, took her to our pediatrician. They looked at her
ears and throat, which were normal, did a flu/RSV test, which was negative, so then did some
blood tests and sent us home. Friday they called and said it looked like maybe it was a virus, so
to just keep an eye on her and wait it out, giving her infant Motrin to keep the fever down.
Friday afternoon, Analise woke up from her nap, and when I took her temperature, it was 106.2!!
So I called the doctor again, and the nurse didn't believe me! :) She had me take the temp under
A's other arm and then take my own temp with the same thermometer to be sure it was working
correctly. Apparently that's a record for our doctor's office...not quite the sort of record I was
hoping for, but... Also, apparently, when most babies get a fever that high they are either
unconscious or having a seizure!! I'm really glad that I didn't know that at the time and also really
glad that we have such a remarkably strong and healthy baby...one that tolerates high temps so
well! So off we went on a Friday night to the doctor that was on call. He took a urine sample
(have you ever done that with a 6-month old baby??? Not Fun. We tried to do it with a bag
taped to her, but it leaked, so they ended up having to catheterize the poor child.) and then gave
her a shot of antibiotic and sent us home. We headed back again Saturday morning because her
fever was still pretty high. The test results came in and told us that it was a urinary tract
infection. We got another shot of power antibiotics and then were sent home with an oral
antibiotic (amoxicillin for those who are curious about such things) to take for ten days. The
doctor just called again to schedule an appointment for the day after Analise finishes her
antibiotic for some more tests and preventative measures...whatever that means! I'm sure the
doc will explain more when we are there. It was a rough few days at the Giger house! To top it
all off, I have been fighting a nasty cold. This would have been an exhausting few days for
someone who was healthy! Ah, well. Such is life with children...or so I have been told. I'm just
glad to have some answers so that we can get Analise healthy again. We got to meet several
different pediatricians through all of this, all of those who were on call during the weekend, and
our own pediatrician was really great, calling the office while we were there on Friday night to
check on Analise, even though she was off work! Thanks to all who prayed us through this.
Probably an experienced mommy would have been much less wigged out by the whole
adventure, but I was just a little scared. Analise is much better now...just a bad diaper rash from
the antibiotics.

On the much more fun side of things, Analise experienced her first big snow this week! I put her
in her snow suit and hauled her outside. She didn't know what to think at first, and got a bit
frustrated that her hands were all bundled up so she couldn't grab the snow. Towards the end
she started to enjoy it, and I let her taste the snow. She liked the new sensation of something
Very Cold in her mouth!

On with the pictures!!

I like funny baby sleeping pictures!
The trouble with photographing a 7 month old and a sign:
We'll try on the floor...whoops! That didn't work either!
What?! What did I do?
I'm just a precious angel! :)

Mommy and Daddy got smart.

Fun times on the floor.

Rolling over is hard work!!

Analise's first big snow. Her snow suit is a little big for her...Christmas Story, anyone?!

Almost a smile...
A little worried!
Hooray! She likes it!
